Powel, a global leader in providing software applications to the energy and utilities industries, announces today that Mozhgan Tavakolifard has joined the company as Chief Analytics Officer. Tavakolifard, who will report to Kevin Gjerstad, CTO of Cloud & Technology at Powel, will lead the advanced analytics and data science teams at Powel.
“The dominant opportunities and challenges in the utility sector are more and more centered around big data, analytics and machine learning. As such, data science is at the core of Powel’s continued investments to bring innovative, intelligent and trustworthy cloud services to market. With extensive big data and analytics experience as well as entrepreneurial experience in data science fields, Tovakolifard will play an instrumental role in Powel’s transformational journey as a global leader within data science in the utilities and renewable energy sectors,” says Powel’s CEO, Bård Benum.
Tavakolifard holds a PhD in Machine Learning from NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with University of California, Santa Barbara. After finalising her PhD in 2012, she worked as Data Scientist with Finn and then Schibsted Media Group. Tavakolifard was one of the key staff working on Schibsted’s transformation into a data-driven company. She contributed to Schibsted’s data strategy, helped hire and form the first data science team in the group, and created and led the first team working on implementation of personalisation solutions. She later joined Sigma as Director of Data Science and member of management team in Sigma Norway.
Tavakolifard started her first company, DharmicData, in 2015. The company, consisting of 12 word-class employees, became one of the first and biggest Nordic Data Centres of Excellence. They helped several major media companies with their data strategies and implementation of data-driven product and services, using their state-of-the-art data processing pipeline. In 2017, Tavakolifard exited DharmicData with the ambition to work on a new idea. Her second company, called IPower.Me, aims to give the power and control of personal data back to individuals and enable a personal data economy.
“I am thrilled to join Powel as Chief Analytic Officer. I am passionate about turning large amounts of data into actionable insights and enabling organizations to make and automate decisions with more efficiency and accuracy. It is a testament to how important data and machine learning are to Powel that it has made data science a central area of investment. I believe that with data science tools Powel will help accelerate the transition to green and renewable energy with less negative environmental impacts, transforming the utilities and energy industries as fundamentally as the internet did,” says Tavakolifard.
Mozhgan Tavakolifard joined Powel on 1 April 2017 and is based in our Oslo office.
