To further streamline their operations, they are adopting Powel ADMS, which will enable significant savings to be made when it comes to customer alerts, more rapid planning and execution of work on the grid, better fault management and improved information flows, both internally within the grid company and to end-users.
“ADMS is an important tool for standardising work at the operations centre. We also believe the quality of the work done will be better with ADMS, both within the companies and for our customers,” says Eirik Storeide, who heads the new grid operations centre, called LOVE (for Lofoten and Vesterålen).
LOVE has been in the air since August 2018, when Lofotkraft, Trollfjord Kraft, Vesterålskraft and Andøy Energi decided to open one shared operations centre. The LOVE operations centre is now up and running with new staff and a new rota system, starting with Lofotkraft. The operations of the other three electric utility companies will be incorporated in the new operations centre once the procedures and systems are in place, including ADMS for all of the companies.
What efficiency gains do you expect to see once all the companies start using the same operations centre?
“Four rotas will become one. We therefore expect to save on costs and time off, without degrading the quality of the services provided by the operations centre. Our ambition is for the quality of the service to improve as the new operations centre really gets going,” says Storeide.
Powel supplies ADMS solution
Two of the companies were using ADMS before the merger (Lofotkraft and Trollfjordkraft), while the other two were not (Vesterålkraft and Andøy Energi). The new operations centre will use the system, which will also provide efficiency gains.
“We have high expectations of ADMS as a support tool. ADMS has become the heart of systems in the operations centre. It is also an important tool for new operators. It makes it easier to get up to speed with new grids. As ADMS is now such an important system, we are completely dependent on the system being up all the time. In that regard, we have great expectations of Powel as a supplier. We are completely dependent on them for our use of ADMS to be a success,” says Storeide.
Easy and intuitive to use
Powel has been working closely with Storeide and the LOVE operations centre to get the ADMS system up and running. The software house has experience from similar mergers and believes that ADMS will give the project a real boost.
“The solution is easy and intuitive to use, both for those working at the operations centre and for other personnel who need to know what is happening in the grid. We are sure that the LOVE operations centre will be happy with our ADMS solution,” says the product manager at Powel, Sjur Messel Nafstad.
“ADMS has become an important part of day-to-day work for most electric utility companies. It has led to more secure and efficient grid management, and I don’t think any of the major utility companies could imagine life without ADMS,” he says.
LOVE is still new and there is plenty left to do before all four grid companies can use their shared operations centre. Storeide is looking forward to the further work.
“The employees need to familiarise themselves with the new grid area as quickly as possible and get used to new ways of running the operations. It is also a challenge to be sufficiently prepared for storms, which often hit electric utility companies hard. We have some issues on the system side, which have taken a bit longer than expected to fix. But a lot of this is now resolved, and the rest will be dealt with through the autumn,” he concludes.
