“OpenNIS is cheaper and easier to operate than GeoNIS and NETBAS. That is why many small grid companies use the system,” says product manager Ragnar Norrheim.
The tool contains not only technical information, but also facilities to model the financial side of the business.
OpenNIS has eight modules, which are briefly described below:
OpenNIS Registration is a field recording tool. Users can enter new or existing networks while they are out in the field. The use of GPS makes data entry on a field PC or tablet more accurate.
OpenNIS Plan is used to plan and design new assets. The solution is integrated with REN, a cost catalogue which contains statistical data to help to price all the work and materials you need in construction projects. The system can also be integrated with material and price catalogues from the suppliers used by the grid company.
OpenNIS Operation is a network archiving, documentation and reporting system. This is the master data system for the grid companies. With OpenNIS Operation, grid companies get an overview of existing facilities and infrastructure and can view this in a map interface or one-line diagram.
OpenNIS Analysis and Calculation:
Technical calculations which the grid companies need to size and operate their assets. These include calculations such as load flows, short circuits, optimisation and contact voltages.
OpenNIS Inspection and Status:
OpenNIS Inspection and Status is an aid to carrying out inspections of assets in the field, as well as dealing with any faults found and generating corrective measures. This is a field solution for tablet, mobile and PC.
The solution manages all work in the grid. All sorts of jobs can be specified. Each job will include detail description of what and how to do the job, location, contact and component information and also material, tools and machinery needed. Assignment of jobs to the company’s field workers are handled through a powerful calendar interface showing all jobs and all field-crews. In due time for job start, the workorders will be transferred to the field solution of each assigned field worker.
The field solution includes at map interface visualizing position of all assets and assigned jobs, functionality for recording time spent, use of machinery and material consumption, warehouse and material orders, handling of inspection lists, photo documentation etc. The system has interfaces to a wide range of finance, ERP and payroll systems for transfer of hours, material transaction, orders etc. The work order system can be used in combination with all of Powel’s NIS systems, i.e synchronization of locations and properties of all assets from NIS to the workorder system.
